Depending on the number of employees, consideration is first given to fully insured plans from reliable carriers. With fully insured plans we are able to implement Gap Coverage at reasonable costs, to reduce the effects of high deductibles. Companies using fully insured plans have the advantage of a fixed monthly cost with premium payment, while self-funded plans recommended for groups of 100 + employees can fluctuate.  Self Funded or ERISA plans allows the employer to control and even reduce the total annual Health Insurance expense due to a larger distribution of risk. Stop Loss reinsurance is needed with these plans to absorb claims above a certain level or of a catastrophic nature.  Self funded plans operate the same as fully insured plans with the incorporation of Third Party Administrators to handle claims and funding. Many of the major Health Insurance carriers also provide this service.
